“The play’s production and delivery is the foundation of its impact. With a creative team of primarily Indigenous individuals, the show is executed simply, with haunting and beautiful visuals alongside the captivating performances of its leads.” – Queen’s Journal
I directed the world premiere of Almighty Voice and His Wife at The Great Canadian Theatre Company in 1991 with Billy Merasty and Jani Lauzon as the two characters. It was a pleasure to accept Theatre Kingston’s invitation to return to the script 26 years later working with the original composer/musician David Deleary, a very young and talented cast, and a creative team of Indigenous artists. The play’s complexity, the contrasting beautiful use of poetic language in Act One and vaudeville in Act Two makes it a unique, colouful and exciting piece to work on. Filled with contrast, it is moving, painful, funny, a love story and a condemnation of Canada’s settler colonial history.
